Coble’s Home Almanac 1932 Guilford County NC publication mentions 2017 eclipse, Past total eclipses “fell close to the time when minor revolts or acts of disapproval of one kind or another have occurred”

One form of recycling is saving items for sentimental or collecting reasons or just discovering something tucked away and not throwing it away.

This happened in Greensboro, NC recently.

From the Greensboro News Record August 21, 2017.

“1932 Greensboro almanac mentions this year’s eclipse

Tucked in a box of old cookbooks, Amanda Cummings found a 1932 Guilford County almanac that mentions that year’s total eclipse — and this year’s.

“When I flipped through it and saw that, I thought ‘This is too cool,’” the Summerfield woman said.

Coble’s Home Almanac, which sold for 10 cents, devotes a half a page to total eclipses.

Past total eclipses visible in the United States “fell close to the time when minor revolts or acts of disapproval of one kind or another have occurred,” according to the almanac.

Sounds familiar.

“The eclipse of 1770 came at the time of the Boston Massacre when citizens were in arms against unjust taxation,” according to the almanac. “The next of this series came in 1824 at which time the Republican party was in revolt and gave birth to the Democrats.”

The almanac notes that after the 1932 eclipse, “there will be no more total solar eclipses for favorable observation in the United States until the year 2017.”

Cummings found the almanac in a box of books that had belonged to her in-laws, who died a few years ago.”
