Gladys Adekanle boasts that for that past 12 years she has bought no vegetables from the grocery.
Other than beef, fish and chicken, most of what ends up on her kitchen table is the product of labor by her and her husband, Akin.
By 6 a.m., she is out getting her hands dirty. She has seven beds to tend at the Mixed Greens Community Garden on Burlington Road in Greensboro, along with a few others scattered around the city. By the end of the growing season, she expects a bounty of peppers, bitter melons, okra and calalloo, a leafy green used in Caribbean and African cooking.
“This is for my family,” she says. “But I end up giving out a lot. This is the time of year when I have so many friends. They’ll come over without calling. When you come to my house, you know you’ll get a package to take with you.”
Mixed Greens, run by the Guilford County Center of the N.C. Cooperative Extension, is one of several community gardens in and around Greensboro where people with a green thumb can rent a plot and plant some tomatoes, squash, kale and other foodstuffs.
Other gardens in the area grow produce for local food banks and homeless shelters, and some seek to educate on healthy eating.”
